Global Mayday….Twitter down!

June 15th, 2010

Twitter has been out of service since early morning PST, which means only half the breakfast for geeks and internet junkies like me.

Globally, Twitter has been down for more than a couple of hours as of writing of this post and it seems you may be getting ‘the whale’ for another sometime.

A note on the Twitter Status blog reads:

“We are experiencing site-wide availability issues due to scheduled  maintenance. We’re currently working to address the issues. We’ll update with more information as it is available.”

Update: We’re currently experiencing site availability issues resulting from the failed enhancement of a new approach to timeline caching. Our infrastructure and operations engineers are currently working to resolve this. We’ll update you soon with an ETA.”

The outage was caused during a slick new feature being added, which supports geolocation. With it, you can tag your tweets to a specific place you’re at, or check-in from Foursquare and Gowalla, nothing we haven’t already been doing thanks to 3rd party clients.

The site may experience hiccups for upto 5 hours, and its a good time to catch up on your real-life friends on facebook, linkedin or wherever you can browse to. We’ll have the updates as they come from Twitter.

Update: 10:17 PM PDT: Users may temporarily experience missing tweets from their timelines. They will be restored shortly.

Update: 11:51 PM PDT: We’re  recovering from the site outage. Remember, users may temporarily experience missing or duplicate tweets from their timelines. Normal timelines will be restored shortly.

Twitter is slowly coming out of the outage and the internet globe seems to be moving again.

Share your comments on the outage below.

According to Dell website, the Streak shall be available to US customers direct from its website from next month for $500. This is an official ‘unlocked’ version, which only means I need to make some quick dirty money so I can order it.

As exciting as the news is, that’s pretty much it on the announcement but I’ll surely be following on the developments.

Height of Procrastination

Launched in 1980, Pac-Man is one of the most successful arcade games of all times. This year, Pac-Man turns 30 and Google created a playable Pac-Man doodle on its homepage on the launch day (22nd May).

The Google Pac-Man doodle was so popular that it is now permanently available at http://www.google.com/pacman/

Not only that, it is estimated that world over, 4.82 million hours have been spent playing the Google Pac-Man on the launch day alone, translating in $120 mn loss in economy. Nothing short of any record, the next time your company sends out those lay-off notices, you know who to blame. While that happens, all you need to do is Insert Coin to be a part of the Google doodle community.

Is Time Travel Possible?

May 4th, 2010

Stephen Hawkins, the legendary cosmologist is a super-hero to many space enthusiasts and science geeks. He’s out with another brilliant article on time travel. According to the theory, all you need to do to travel through time is to go fast, really fast!

“Time travel was once considered scientific heresy. I used to avoid talking about it for fear of being labeled a crank. But these days I’m not so cautious. In fact, I’m more like the people who built Stonehenge. I’m obsessed by time. If I had a time machine I’d visit Marilyn Monroe in her prime or drop in on Galileo as he turned his telescope to the heavens. Perhaps I’d even travel to the end of the universe to find out how our whole cosmic story ends.

To see how this might be possible, we need to look at time as physicists do – at the fourth dimension. It’s not as hard as it sounds. Every attentive schoolchild knows that all physical objects, even me in my chair, exist in three dimensions. Everything has a width and a height and a length.

But there is another kind of length, a length in time. While a human may survive for 80 years, the stones at Stonehenge, for instance, have stood around for thousands of years. And the solar system will last for billions of years. Everything has a length in time as well as space. Traveling in time means traveling through this fourth dimension…..

…Given enough power and advanced technology, perhaps a giant wormhole could even be constructed in space. I’m not saying it can be done, but if it could be, it would be a truly remarkable device. One end could be here near Earth, and the other far, far away, near some distant planet.

Theoretically, a time tunnel or wormhole could do even more than take us to other planets. If both ends were in the same place, and separated by time instead of distance, a ship could fly in and come out still near Earth, but in the distant past. Maybe dinosaurs would witness the ship coming in for a landing.”

Microsoft Kin..coming up in a week!

Kin launch

I’m super excited to blog this update, though I didn’t get the time to post about all the amazing stuff it has to offer.

I would take this opportunity to tell you how awesome this new device is, with its social capabilities and a combo of windows phone 7 & zune engine at the back, but the official kin website does it in way cooler way. So head over to the site and set your stop watches to May 6th, 2010 for pre-order over the air.

My personal favorite is the Kin Two. There is however, something I want to let out at Microsoft.

See, the Kin is supposed to be about being social, always connected and sharing stuff at the touch of a button, but its also supposed to be a full-time multimedia player with that HD camera and Zune engine in the background. Wouldn’t it be sensible to launch the device ‘without’ any carrier contract? I mean, what’s Zune got to do with Verizon?
